How to Measure Your Finger for Ring Size (Without a Ring Sizer)

Finding your ring size at home is easier than you might think. While professional jewelers use calibrated ring sizers for the most accurate fit, there are several reliable at-home methods you can use in a pinch. Below are three tried-and-true techniques using common household items.

1. The String or Paper Strip Method

What you need:

  • String, dental floss, or thin strip of paper

  • Pen or marker

  • Ruler (millimeters work best)

Steps:

  1. Wrap the string or paper snugly around the base of your finger.

  2. Mark where the ends overlap.

  3. Lay it flat and measure the length in millimeters.

  4. Compare that measurement to a ring size chart.

Pro Tip:

Measure at the end of the day when your fingers are slightly larger. Cold fingers can give you a size that’s too small.

2. Measure a Ring You Already Own

What you need:

  • A ring that fits the correct finger

  • Ruler or calipers

Steps:

  1. Measure the inside diameter of the ring (straight across the center).

  2. Use millimeters for best accuracy.

  3. Match the diameter to a ring sizing chart.

Important:

Make sure you measure a ring worn on the same finger and hand. Fingers on your dominant hand are usually slightly larger.

3. Printable Ring Size Chart Method

What you need:

  • Printer

  • Printable ring sizing chart (set printer to 100% scale)

Steps:

  1. Print the chart without scaling (no “fit to page”).

  2. Verify scale using a credit card or ruler guide on the printout.

  3. Place your ring over the printed circles until one matches exactly.

Common Mistake:

If the print scale is off, your ring size will be too.

Extra Tips for the Most Accurate Fit

  • Avoid measuring when your hands are very cold or very hot.

  • If you’re between sizes, go slightly larger.

  • Wider bands usually feel tighter — you may want to size up by ¼–½ size.

When in Doubt

If the ring is expensive, custom, or made with natural stones, it’s always safest to confirm sizing with a jeweler before purchasing or resizing.
